Green juice

I think one of the most important aspects of the paleo/primal diet is the incorporation of copious amounts of vegetables. Due to the fact that food preparation does tend to take longer than the SAD diet, newbies and those with little free time may focus more on their protein and fat intake. Paleo parents may also need to skimp on their children's veggies due to typical young palettes. My girls (4 and 2) eat a lot of veggies but getting in those leafy greens is a bit of a struggle. Packed with vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients and fiber, veggies (especially greens) are essential to proper regularity and cell function. One way that my family gets a whole lot of green in one quick punch is through green juice. Not only is it delicious but I can get about a pound of greens in one juicing.

There are many different types of juicers out there and I won't go through them all but the one I own and recommend if you don't have a whole lot of time to spend juicing a day is the Breville Elite or Breville Ikon.


They juice quickly and efficiently. You don't get as much juice from leafy greens as compared to a masticating juicer (like an Omega) but they are faster and clean up a whole lot easier. One tip I can give is to run the pulp through the juicer a second time and you'll get about an extra 1/3 of a cup.

My go-to green juice recipe

1 head of romaine
1 cucumber (peeled if not organic)
4-5 leaves of kale
1 thumb sized piece of fresh ginger root
1 lemon
2 organic apples



Put a few ice cubes into the collection cup (chilling this juice makes it even tastier).



















Juice on low setting: romaine, cucumber, kale and ginger. Juice on high setting: lemon and apples. Enjoy!!

 

My kids and I adore this emerald jewel of a juice and they demand it everyday. Yum!

  1. I really hope you keep updating this blog....I have read every single one of your posts. I have UCTD (close to lupus) and I am doing the paleo diet too in attempt to heal myself. All my doctors want to do is keep my on meds (plaquenil, atarax for unending chronic hives!, prednisone when I have a flare and more). My Rheumatologist totally rolled his eyes when I went gluten free and told him my symptoms disappeared in 2 weeks. I went off Plaquenil 4 months later, but unfortunately in another 4 weeks from then, my symptoms came back. Which leads to today where I am going to go 100% paleo this time in addition to gluten free to put my UCTD back in remission. I'm on the verge of going to a naturopath but she's outrageously expensive....I'm still taking my meds right now....but I have no relief....

    I am so happy to have found your blog. I am a vegetarian considering going paleo.

    Like Tamara, I also struggle with UCTD--which I'm still convinced is Lupus. I am also on plaquenil.

    I also have chronic pain syndrome/fibro and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome.

    I'd love to hear more about your nutritional journey and if going paleo has really helped you.

    I'll have to read more of your blog tomorrow!

  3. Tamara, I'm back and updating regularly again. Just had to take a whole lot of time being pregnant and then adjusting to having 3 kids, etc. Have you been able to stick to 100% paleo, are you feeling better yet? I've found that gluten is my #1 nemesis. I can literally have a piece of bread one day and feel the effects the next (a little stiff the next morning, sluggish and totally fatigued). You said your symptoms came back, have you had a good look at what you were eating. I know how easy it is to slip up (we all do it and you just have to brush it off) and it's very easy to ingest gluten without knowing it! It is so many things that you would never, ever have thought of. Eating out is a culprit too and something that I really can't do a lot of. Please let me know how you are doing!

    Paleo/primal WOE has totally changed everything for me. I just had my third (and final!) child 2 1/2 months ago and I am now totally off all my meds for the first time in 6 years. I cannot tell you how much this has changed my life! I was vegan for 7 months and didn't have the success I have now, besides the fact that I was miserably hungry all the time!!
